किसी वृक्ष के भूमि के ऊपर के भाग में मुख्यत: तना और शाखाएँ होती हैं, जिनके अंतिम सिरे पत्तियाँ धारण करनेवाली टहनियों का रूप लेते हैं। तने और शाखाओं से ही इमारती लकड़ी (Timber) प्राप्त होती है। भारत में शीशम, साखू, सागौन, महुआ, देवदार, कैल, चीड़, सिरसा, आबनूस, तून, पडौक, आम, नीम, आदि महत्वपूर्ण इमारती लकड़ियाँ होती हैं। सागौन, बर्मा, थाइलैंड और जावा में भी होता है। उपर्युक्त वृक्षों के अतिरिक्त और भी अनेक वृक्ष हैं, जिनकी लकड़ियाँ किसी विशिष्ट उद्देश्य के लिए अत्यंत उपयुक्त होती हैं, जैसे बबूल की लकड़ी पहियों के लिए और गूलर की लकड़ी कुओं के चक्के के लिए।
